Canadian Immigration Goal Soars to 1.3 Million Over 3 Years

BecomeACanadian - Immigration Goals

Canada has announced an aggressive plan to bring over 1.3 million immigrants to the country over the next three years. The increase in people will support the post-pandemic growth. According to the 2022-2024 Immigration Levels Plan, the government’s goal is to bring in 431,000 permanent residents this year, 447,000 next year, and 451,000 in 2024.

The old goals were 411,000 and 421,000. The largest nationality receiving permanent residency in Canada are people from India (close to 40 percent). Two years ago, over 27,000 Indians were admitted to Canada, and over 50,000 applied for permanent residency. Sean Fraser, Canada’s immigration minister, said the country is focused on the recovery of the economy and the key to that happening is immigration. This year, close to 56 percent of new immigrants will come under economic class Canadian immigration pathways.

Immigration has been one of the main components fueling the economy in Canada and accounts for almost 100 percent of the country’s employment growth. In 2021, Canada allowed over 405,000 people to enter the country, the largest increase in a single year in history.

Under the new plan, overall admissions will be 1.14 percent of the total Canadian population by 2024, and 60 percent of immigrants will qualify as economic immigrants based on their work experience and skill.
